THOUGHTS & SMILES:
A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning.
The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school. She also feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of concern, the mother got into her car and quickly drove along the route to her child's school.  As she did, she saw her little girl walking along.
At each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up, and smile.  More lightning followed quickly and with each, the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile.
When the mother drew up beside the child, she lowered the window and called, "What are you doing?" The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty because God keeps taking my picture."
May God Bless You Today and every day as you face the storms that come your way!!

Typhoon Haiyan – Philippines
On November 8, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan, hit the Philippines’ Eastern Visayas Region. The devastation and loss of life is widespread and ongoing.
PWRDF partner Father Rex Reyes, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of the Philippines (NCCP), sent this message:  "I bid you pray for the repose of the dead, comfort to the survivors and strength to those who minister to their needs. Give of yourself that God's love may be made real."
The Canadian government has announced a matching grant program for donations to relief work in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.  Between November 9 and December 9, 2013, all donations received for typhoon relief from Canadians by registered charities—including PWRDF—will be matched, dollar for dollar, by the Canadian government. Relief agencies including PWRDF will be able to apply to the Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund to enhance relief projects in the Philippines, although there is no guarantee that any project or agency will receive funding from the Relief Fund.
PWRDF has pledged an initial response of $20,000 towards the ACT Alliance appeal to be implemented by the NCCP in the Philippines.

-Prayer
Loving God, we come to you trusting in your mercy and knowing that your steadfast love endures forever. Look with mercy on those who are harmed or displaced. Give them strength to meet the days ahead, your peace which passes all understanding and new hope in the resurrection. Move in those who are able to give aid, that we may be your hands and heart on earth. Be with all who offer assistance, may your Spirit uphold them. As you have made water a sign of your kingdom, and of cleansing and rebirth, grant your people vision to see a new life on the other side of disaster.
To you be given all honour and praise, through Jesus Christ our Saviour and Lord. Amen
FROM THE CANON MISSIONER'S DESK...

Pet Blessing on Sunday Sept. 22 at 2 PM. A Pet Blessing is an opportunity to bring your pet to a time of blessing and prayer and thanksgiving. Last year about a dozen pets and an equal number of pet lovers came and enjoyed this ½ hour service. Bring your pet to the church at 2 PM, Sunday, Sept. 22; gather outdoors by the parish hall. If the weather is poor, we will gather in the hall. All pets should be on a leash, or some other way of keeping them from running away! If you can’t bring your pet, bring a picture of them. Go ahead and invite a friend, animal or human: the more the merrier!
Offering for Our Pets: Donations of pet food and gifts for young animals at the local SPCA will be greatly appreciated. A box will be set up in the Narthex for food and gifts.
Parish website: here is the link: www.holytrinityyorkton.blogspot.ca Take a look!
Kickoff Sunday is September 8, and of course you are asked to wear your Roughrider green and white that day! After that, we resume many activities:
Calling all men: starting again on September 7th, Holy Trinity Brothers meets for breakfast at 9 AM on Saturdays. Place: West Broadway Grill. The men’s monthly breakfast is a great chance to about how the Riders are doing, or the Terriers, or possibly how the People’s Warden’s ATV is going this year. And other important men’s issues! Occasionally we take on a project, like the new church
mower and shed, but mostly we just hang out.
Kim Salo is teaching a course for the Qu’Appelle School for Ministry and Mission (Q.S.M.M.) again this year. On Sept. 13-14 at St. Mary’s Regina he will teach on “Evangelism and Church Growth.” Cost is $50.00.
“Cowboy Church” is coming up on September 29th. Holy Trinity is hosting the seven churches of Pelly Deanery at 11 AM at the farm of Barry and Dale Sharpe. Regular service at Holy Trinity is cancelled that day and all are invited to put on their cowboy duds and come on out to Cowboy Church. The Sharpe’s farm is just 5 minutes west of Yorkton, and they have a former fairground building decorated as western style saloon. Special music is by the local gospel quartet Prairie Blend. A pot luck lunch follows. Yeehaw!
Larry Mitchell Event: Oct.25-26 is the date for an event featuring retired archdeacon Larry Mitchell of Saskatoon. The two day event (Fri.-Sat.) is called Renewing the Church with Faith, Hope, and Healing. This event is open to all, especially Anglicans in Pelly Deanery. The location is the Stirling Room in Saltcoats, across from the Post Office. Times are Friday, Oct. 25 from 6:30-9 PM, and Saturday, Oct. 26 from 9 AM to 4 PM. Larry has long been a leader in Anglican Church renewal, and the healing ministry as the former North American Warden of the Order of St. Luke. Come and enjoy an inspirational speaker!
Cursillo Weekend: Kim Salo is the Assistant Spiritual Director (taking over from Susan Salo) for the Diocesan Co-ed Cursillo Weekend, Nov. 15 to 17. This is for both men and women; married couples are encouraged to attend. If you are looking for a fun way to deepen your faith, ask Marilyn Pachal about her Cursillo weekend. Cursillo is a well established ministry of the Anglican church worldwide which offers a weekend experience of fellowship, teaching, worship and fun. Many Anglicans (and lots of others!) have grown in their faith and action through Cursillo.
Bishop Rob Hardwick is coming to Pelly Deanery on Nov. 2nd and 3rd. On Saturday he will be in Whitesand Parish. On Sunday morning he will confirm several candidates at Christ Church, Churchbridge, in New Sumner Parish. And on Sunday afternoon, Bishop Rob will chair an open meeting of all Anglicans in the 7 churches of Pelly Deanery. This will be an opportunity to gather as Anglicans across the Deanery, hear some of our stories, raise questions, and consider our common future. The Pelly Deanery meeting will take place in the parish hall of Holy Trinity, starting with gathering at 2:30 and meeting to begin at 3 PM. Come and share with your brother and sister Anglicans!
Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) Concert: on Friday Dec. 6, at 7 PM: a fund-raising concert for PWRDF will feature the harpist Martha Cowie. She is a harpist who has played for PWRDF concerts in St. John’s Cathedral, Saskatoon, and elsewhere. Expect a delightful evening of seasonal and sacred harp music, with a message about the global mission work of Anglicans.
And now a word from our sponsor: “Since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with revrance and awe, for our God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:28-29.

from the Canon Missioners, Rev. Kim and Rev. Susan Salo

          CANON HILL ACW

Whew! What a busy summer! It is hard to believe that it is time to settle down and get organized again. The first ACW meeting this fall is scheduled for September 9th at 2 pm in the St. Cecilia room.
Our membership is dwindling and, while all Anglican church women help with every- we do, I encourage anyone able to attend this meeting to come and join us.
Plans are in place to hold a bake sale on September 13th during the garage sale and we will be phoning the congregation for baking.  Thank you in advance; we always get a nice selection.
In October we will decorate the church for Harvest Thanksgiving.  Our Christmas Tea is booked for November 30th.
The church calendars have been ordered and will be for sale as soon as they arrive.
Enjoy the beautiful fall days and may
God bless all the Anglican women in the Pelly Deanery.

FAIR BOOTH

Our small congregation of Holy Trinity pulled together to make this fund raising event a success
The Fair Booth committee would like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make it a success. A special thanks to Donna & Ray -Chair people; Jim & Dorothea Davis for all the running around picking up & delivering supplies; Don (financial), Susan (phoning for workers and organizing the shift schedule) and Anne & Joyce & Margaret (helping everywhere!!!!!)- these people always worked above the call of duty .
The fun and fellowship seemed to make all the jobs go better. To the “Onion” people; & all the helpers who got the booth ready each morning by cleaning, setup and filling items; to ALL the people who cooked, served customers, cleaned and did the many jobs, and especially to the people who worked two or more shifts,- we give a heartfelt “THANK YOU”.
Working together we are a wonderful church.
For 2013 our profit is $7261.93

The Afternoon Bible Study Group

This fall the Bible study group will take a careful look at the life of Jesus.  The
study booklet explores the gospel of John for a specific purpose:  “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name.”
For many of you this will be a review; a chance to reaffirm your beliefs.
All are welcome to attend.  The study guides are $10.00 each.
Sessions will start on Friday, October 4th  1:30 to 2:30 pm in the East Hall .
This could be the most meaningful hour of your week and we hope you can join us.
Please let me know by September 8th if you plan to attend so I have time to get enough booklets.

God's blessing,                                                                           Joyce Bagley  ...306-783-4209

God's Gifts

God's gifts are more than I can put
into a poem in a lifetime.
Count every breath and mark it down.
Paint every colour that I see;
every taste, each move I make;
the universe filled with uncountable stars-
an insurmountable task
The birds, the flowers,
each sparkling snowflake
and person after person.
Wonder after wonder
makes me mute.
Mere words are meaningless.
God's gifts surpass
my small imagination.
And in that silent wonder
I behold His greatest gift:
Himself.

Lutheran Pastor's Fall Newsletter

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name.  Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits.  Psalm 103:1-2

I have always found it interesting when the psalmist tells himself what to do.  He has to convince his soul to bless the Lord.  But isn't it true?  Sometimes we can get side tracked.  Sometimes our soul can be weigh down with grief and bitterness.  Sometimes our soul is anxious and fearful.  Sometimes our soul needs a good talking to.
There is much to bless the Lord for.  In the next few verses, the psalmist lists God as the one who forgives all our sins, heals all our diseases, redeems our life from hell, crowns us with steadfast love and mercy, satisfies us with good.  And the psalm goes on.
Here, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, we are celebrating 100 years of ministry.  We started in 1913 in a little house church on Maple.   When the Methodist and the Presbyterians joined to become the United Church in 1928, they vacated a church on 4th and Smith.  The Lutheran moved in.  And throughout the years, God has blessed us with wonderful families and pastors.  God has filled us grace and mercy.  God has led us through some good times and some bad times.  What the Lutheran church looked like in 1913 looks like probably nothing compared to what it looks like today.  Change has happened.  We can speak English!  Women can have a more prominent role in the church!  Children can receive Holy Communion! We now have a contemporary worship service on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month!  We do long for the good old days when there were more people in the pew, when there were more younger families and when things were more constant.  We second guess the changes we have made.  We hope we have made the right choices.  We hope we have been faithful to God's Word.
The wonderful benefits from God is God's constancy.  God forgives, heals, redeems, loves, is merciful and satisfies.  This is unchanging.  It is not dependent on us.
During our holidays, Joyce and I, Joel and Jonathan were involved in a single car rollover accident.  Our beautiful Dodge Charger was written off.  But we all survived.  We only had one detached hand tendon, a few scrapes and bruises and some bad memories.  It was easy to be bitter about the experience.  And yet we are alive.  God provided wonderful nurses who happened to be travelling by the accident.  We had family who was willing to pick us up and take us to their homes.  We had church members who picked us up at the Regina Airport and gave us a vehicle for a week.  Sometimes one has to remind the soul to bless the Lord

INFORMATION & FUNERAL INSTRUCTIONS FORM

Enclosed is an information sheet that we ask you to fill out and return to the office.
It is a form that will help the office and ministers to have contact people and phone numbers in case of an emergency. As we know, a lot of us have families that are living elsewhere and therefore a contact person is very helpful both to the ministers and to you.
On the other side is Instructions for My Funeral. Many of us have talked or thought about what bible readings we love or which hymns we are fond of and would like to have that read or sang at our funeral. Have you told your family members? This form is a great help again to the family and the ministers at this particular time they would like to fill your wish to have your favourite readings and songs done as a tribute to you.
Many families are at a loss when the time comes to pick a loved one’s favourite songs etc., and this form has been a great help to the family members in the past.
We need to update our files, and again request that you fill out the form and return it to the church office.
All files will be kept confidential.

 THOUGHTS & SMILES:
The Twenty and the  One
A well-worn  one-dollar bill and a similarly distressed twenty-dollar bill  arrived at a Federal Reserve Bank to be retired.
As they moved along the conveyor belt to be burned, they struck up a conversation.
The twenty-dollar bill reminisced about its travels all over the country.
"I've had a pretty good life," the twenty proclaimed... "Why I've been to Las Vegas and Atlantic City, the finest restaurants in New York, performances on Broadway, and even a cruise to the Caribbean ...."
"Wow!" said the one-dollar bill. "You've really had an exciting life!"
"So, tell me," says the twenty, "where have you been throughout your lifetime?"
The one dollar bill replies, "Oh, I've been to the Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church, the Baptist Church, the Lutheran Church..."
The twenty-dollar bill interrupts, "What's a church?"

Amen

 THOUGHTS & SMILES:
CHURCH RESTORATION PROJECT
There was a tradesman, a painter named Jack, who was very interested in making a dollar where he could. Se he often would thin down his paint to make it go a wee bit further. As it happened, he got away with this for some time. Eventually the local church decided to do a big restoration project. Jack put in a painting bid and, because is price was so competitive, he got the job. And so he started, erecting the trestles and putting up the planks, and buying the paint and thinning it down with turpentine.
Jack was up on the scaffolding, painting away, the job nearly done, when suddenly there a horrendous clap of thunder. The sky opened and the rain poured down, washing the thin paint from all over the church and knocking Jack off the scaffold to land on the lawn.
Jack was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from the Al- mighty, so he fell on his knees and cried, “Oh God! Forgive me! What should I do?”
And from the thunder, a mighty Voice spoke, “Repaint! Repaint! And thin no more!”

Amen

 THOUGHTS & SMILES:
1. She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup, under the watchful eyes of her young granddaughter, as she'd done many times before. After she applied her lipstick and started to leave, the little one said, "But Grandma, you forgot to kiss the toilet paper good-bye!" I will probably never put lipstick on again without thinking about kissing the toilet paper good-bye.
2. My young grandson called the other day to wish me Happy Birthday. He asked me how old I was, and I told him, 62. My grandson was quiet for a moment, and then he asked, "Did you start at 1?"

 THOUGHTS & SMILES:
BILLY GRAHAM'S SUIT
Billy Graham is now 91-years-old with Parkinson’s disease. In January 2000, leaders in Charlotte, North Carolina invited their favourite son, Billy Graham, to a luncheon in his honour. Billy initially hesitated to accept the invitation because he struggles with Parkinson's disease. But the Charlotte leaders said, 'we don't expect a major address. Just come and let us honour you. So he agreed.  After wonderful things were said about him, Dr. Graham stepped to the rostrum, looked at the crowd, and said, "I'm reminded today of Albert Einstein, the great physicist who this month has been honoured by Time magazine as the Man of the Century.  Einstein was once traveling from Princeton on a train when the conductor came down the aisle, punching the tickets of every passenger. When he came to Einstein, Einstein reached in his vest pocket. He couldn't find his ticket, so he reached in his trouser pockets. It wasn't there.  He looked in his briefcase but couldn't find it. Then he looked in the seat beside him. He still couldn't find it.  "The conductor said, 'Dr. Einstein, I know who you are. We all know who you are. I'm sure you bought a ticket. Don't worry about it.'  "Einstein nodded appreciatively. The conductor continued down the aisle punching tickets. As he was ready to move to the next car, he turned around and saw the great physicist down on his hands and knees looking under his seat for his ticket.  "The conductor rushed back and said, 'Dr. Einstein, Dr. Einstein, don't worry, I know who you are; no problem. You don't need a ticket. I'm sure you bought one.' Einstein looked at him and said, 'Young man, I too, know who I am. What I don't know is where I'm going.''
Having said that, Billy Graham continued, "See the suit I'm wearing? It's a brand new suit. My children, and my grandchildren are telling me I've gotten a little slovenly in my old age. I used to be a bit more fastidious. So I went out and bought a new suit for this luncheon and one more occasion. You know what that occasion is? This is the suit in which I'll be buried. But when you hear I'm dead, I don't want you to immediately remember the suit I'm wearing. I want you to remember this: I not only know who I am. I also know where I'm going."
May your troubles be less, your blessings more, and may nothing but happiness, come through your door. And the best wish I have for you:
"Life without God
is like an unsharpened pencil -
it has no point."
More I cannot wish on!
As he walked off, he received a standing ovation….

 THOUGHTS & SMILES:
Repairing Hearts & Getting Older
A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a well-known heart surgeon in his shop.
The surgeon was there, waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike.
The mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey, Doc, can I ask you a question?"
The surgeon a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, fix 'em, put 'em back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I get such a small salary and you get the really big bucks, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"
The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic...
"Try doing it with the engine running."

Prayer after a Natural Disaster-remembering at this time the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy:
Loving God, we come to you trusting in your mercy and knowing that your steadfast love endures forever. Look with mercy on those who are harmed or displaced by flood, fire or wind.
Amen

CHURCH NEWS –Nov.1

 THOUGHTS & SMILES:
An Honoured Son
He came, this young Canadian,                          The final sacrifice he made,
From out the Golden West,                                 He lies in foreign earth-
Full of courage and of faith.                                 Far from home, an exile
Of ardor, hope and zest.                                     From the country of his birth.
A willing volunteer, he came-                              And yet, amongst his kin he sleeps
And offered us his life-                                        In friendly company-
His youth, his strength, his heart and soul             No stranger, but an Honoured Son
To fling into the strife.                                          Of one great family.                Anonymous

CHURCH NEWS –Oct 18

 THOUGHTS & SMILES:
“A minister was completing a temperance sermon. With great emphasis he said, “If I had all the beer in the world I’d take and pour it into the river.” With greater emphasis he said, “And if I had all the wine in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river.” And then finally, shaking his fist in the air, he said, “And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I’d take it and pour it into the river.” Sermon completed, he sat down….
The song leader stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, “For our closing song, let us sing Hymn
 # 365  “Shall We Gather at the River.”
